Teaching the Language of Respect
In teaching language and respect to a toddler, you've got to respond appropriately. If they say "no", respect that and stop what you're doing. If they ask for something, give it to them. This is how they learn the power of words. If there is some reason you can't or won't give them what they are asking for, take the time to explain and show them why. Give them some credit, they can understand you.
If they say "no" and you continue anyway, if they ask you for something and you ignore them; you can't reasonably be upset with them if they do the same to you. You've taught them, through your reactions, that this is the appropriate response."
